Disaster Responder volunteers (DAT) provide on-call, immediate assistance (food, shelter, clothing) to those affected by local disasters such as house fires, floods, etc. When it is necessary to open up a shelter for these clients, volunteers are needed for shelter operations (set-up, feeding, dormitory management).
Work in Health Services to assist disaster clients with their medications and medical equipment
Disaster Health Nurses provide emergency and preventive health services to support people adversely affected by disasters, both victims and disaster workers.
Work on Disaster Action Teams, deploy to national incidents, assist with blood drives, and develop and teach health and safety courses on a wide variety of topics, including CPR, First Aid, disaster healthcare, Nurse Assistant Training and family care giving.
Provide emotional support to Red Cross volunteers, staff and to clients
Provide counseling, crisis interventions, mental health screenings and emotional care support to Disaster Workers and clients for disaster related stress and/or grief.
Public Affairs-write articles for the newsletter, local media.
Work with local media outlets to help explain the role of the Red Cross during local disasters. Assist with developing and maintaining good media relationships. Writes press releases, takes photographs and represent the Red Cross on disaster scenes and for general media reports. Use all forms of media (print, broadcast and electronic) in order to help the Red Cross to disseminate disaster response, relief and recovery information to the public.
Logistics volunteers
Supports activities and services necessary to conduct disaster relief operations; including the securing of facilities, supplies and equipment required to run a disaster response. Help manage the chapters inventory of materials, supplies and equipment
Human Resource Management- Manage all aspects of overseeing a volunteers workforce.
Help recruit, screen and interview new prospective volunteers. Place them in positions that match their individual skill sets or desired position. Keep and update volunteer records, provide volunteer appreciation and recognition activities. Track volunteer satisfaction and help Disaster Leadership increase their response capacities.
Teach members of your community how to prepare for disasters.
Assist Red Cross in educating community organizations and agencies to prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. Help individuals know how to build a disaster supply kit, how to develop a disaster plan and how to be informed.
Administrative Volunteers
Greet visitors at the front desk and answer the phone. Perform administrative activities such as filing and simple computer operations.
Create more leadership volunteer positions which will attract more long-term volunteers. Coordinate volunteer recognition events and post volunteer job opportunities on line. Update chapter Facebook.
Fundraising Volunteer
Assist the Financial Development team with Red Cross fundraising initiatives, donor activities, grant research and writing, event planning, donor thank you calls, donor event support, set up board of director meetings and committee meetings.
Become an advocate for the Red Cross by hosting in-house informational parties at the Chapter, individual homes and local venues.
Social Media Volunteer
Use your skills to assist the Red Cross with keeping their mission in the social media world. Post updates to Facebook, Twitter and the Chapter Website.
